He also drew inspiration from other MMOs but the design in RuneScape was one he followed particularly closely RuneScape Gold, building into the universe of Melvor Idle as a parallel universe to the 20-year-old RPG. "RuneScape became a crucial gaming platform because it was such a fundamental game for me," the author explains."
As with many others, I first started playing RuneScape because a lot of my friends at the time played it. Its being played via a browser was a major factor in this. The easy entry point with RuneScape's deep branching depth and complexity made me want to return to the game for a long time which is exactly what I've always wanted to replicate using Melvor Idle."
With Malcolm being transparent about his ideas the word quickly spread to Jagex that fan-made game that was based on its own MMO. An employee flagged it to the company's management team, and director of product management Chris Pfeiffer telling us his team was impressed with "how much was achieved and how much of the game was in line with RuneScape."
"The vision for Melvor Idle is also completely in tune with our primary principles of what constitutes the game live -- which is why it was a natural fit with us" he says. "Furthermore Old School RuneScape Gold, the idea of giving someone from our local community this opportunity is a great motivator for everyone who works in the field."
